Bursting!

Not only is the garden bursting with colour but with each day of sunshine I find myself bursting with more and more ideas, bursting with excitement and bursting to get into the garden centre and stock up on everything!

I’m an all or nothing girl, I cant do something half heartedly, so since I have set my mind to creating this garden I have hardly been able to think about anything else. I blame Gardeners World magazine, with each issue I get more ideas and write ever changing lists of what I want to plant and create!

Fruit/Salad and Veg ideas  that I have collected this month and will try to replicate, from magazines, are as follows:

  1. Non Stop Salads for £10. This involves using 5 packets of salad leaf seeds, and 6 pots. You plant into each pot at weekly intervals with different salads that develop at different speeds. Then as you harvest one you replace with a different seed.  So in 4 weeks you should be able to harvest all the crop from the first pot, and you should get one thing to harvest weekly from week three onwards. I shall try Rossa Lettuce, Little Gem lettuce, Speedy Mix Lettuce, Iceberg Lettuce and I’ll throw some radish in as there is only so much lettuce I can eat.  (Click pic to enlarge – image from Gardeners Word Magazine)
  2. Tomatoes. I planted my seeds too early and they have gone over, so I shall try again or with small plugs. Taken from an article in GW mag called ‘Back Door Veg’ I shall try growing 3 different types of tom in a large deep container. Golden Sunrise in the middle, Sweet and Neat and Tumbling Tom either side of that, and some marigolds thrown in the container to keep pests away. Ill do 2 containers like this one planted slightly later then the other to stagger production. (Click pic to enlarge – image from Gardeners Word Magazine)
  3. Strawberry’s. I’m going to grow them under cover to try and get early fruits. Ill try Cambridge Vigour which is an early fruiting variety as is Gariguette.

Plant wise I am still just going to see what takes my fancy closer to the end of April and get plugs for them. My mind changes so often that I dare not buy them all now for fear of my plans changing! I have hanging baskets to consider and many many pots to plant up. All I know for certain is I want lots of colour. The rest will be whatever I fancy at the time. 🙂

  4. Oh this is wonderful. I have been growing lettuce over the years but it all comes out at once and we can’t use it up…..so I really like the interval plan!! My tomato plants are doing very well….but they are still inside for now. Weather has still been too dodgy to put them outside! Thanks for the post. Can’t wait to see what happens next!
